Charity Presents Competition Prize

18/09/08

John Kerby, Chief Executive of Heathfield based charity, National Talking Newspapers & Magazines, has presented Celia Harris from Heathfield, the winner of its Le Marche competition, with the prize of a Wireless Laptop kindly donated by the competition’s sponsor, local IT solutions provider Osiris Systems (www.osirissystems.co.uk).

The competition, designed to help raise awareness of common visual impairments that affect people’s ability to read, ran during the charity’s recent Studio Open Day, held during Heathfield’s annual Anglo-French market. Entrants had to guess the identity of six famous people whose photos were distorted according to the effects of common eye conditions.

Competition winner Celia, who suffers from dyslexia, understands the difficulties faced by the charity’s subscribers: “As someone who struggles to read print, I understand the frustration felt by people who can no longer read newspapers and magazines because of poor vision,” said Celia.

Winning the competition couldn’t have come at a better time. “Our family computer is seven years old and on the brink of death. This laptop will make a great replacement,” said Celia.

Simon Courcha, the charity’s marketing manager, commented: “The Studio Open Day was a great success, raising much needed funds for the charity and attracting more than a dozen potential volunteer readers. A big thank you to our main sponsor Osiris Systems and to all the local businesses that contributed prizes for our tombola. Although we are a national charity, we are very much reliant on, and grateful for, the support of the local community.”
