A.G.M. Weymouth

The TNAUK A.G.M. at Weymouth was the usual convivial affair with workshops and trade stands in plenty. The main item of business was the discussion in the morning of the motion proposed by Council to separate the operation of the Heathfield business from that of the members’ association. This was approved by Council with an overwhelming majority and was put to members at the A.G.M. to get their views.

The AGM

There was a good discussion of the motion at the A.G.M. chaired by His Honour Judge John Rogers QC. The motion was eventually amended, not because there was not general support for the proposal but because some members did not agree with the proposal to adopt a new name for the members’ association and leave Heathfield with the name TNAUK. The outcome will await the report of an independent Working Party consisting of Jeremy Waddell, John Hine and His Honour Judge John Rogers on the best way to proceed.

The Future

In the meantime at the Council meeting on October 11th Ted Davis MBE was elected Chairman, Mike Wood of Swindon TN Vice-Chairman and Richard Scriven CBE Hon Treasurer. Ted was formerly chairman from 1984-1989.

Mike is a former Council member with 18 years experience of talking newspapers. Richard is a qualified accountant and experienced charity trustee. He was principal finance officer for the Corporation of London.

The Council was reorganised into three committees. The first consists of Heathfield volunteers and IT experts that will manage the National Recording Centre at Heathfield; the second will manage the trading activities of TNEL; the third will be responsible for member services.

For the time being the Heathfield committees will still have to report to the Council since it will be ultimately responsible but normally this will be limited to one Council meeting a year. This will be the one in July at which the committee will present the year-end results and budget for the following year. This will also be the TNEL AGM. This means that all other trustees will be able to devote their time to members’ business at all other meetings.

Mike Wood as Vice-Chairman will be responsible for organising members’ services. TNAUK at Heathfield will continue to provide association services such as membership records, collection of subscriptions, group insurance etc.

This restructuring will ensure that the Heathfield volunteers will be responsible for the Heathfield project and Council will be able to concentrate on members’ interests.
