Sir Trevor becomes Honorary President of the Talking Newspaper Association

Sir Trevor McDonald OBE has become the Honorary President of the Talking Newspaper Association of the UK it was announced today.

The charity, formed 30 years ago as a membership association for the hundreds of local talking newspaper groups that provide local news on tape for blind people in their area, is this year celebrating the 21st anniversary of its National Newspaper and Magazine Service, which it operates at Heathfield, East Sussex.

Sir Trevor's acceptance to become the Honorary President marks a milestone in the charity's unique service. Ted Davis MBE, the Association's Chairman, said: "To have such an eminent broadcaster as Sir Trevor will give our staff, volunteers and listeners a great boost in this special year. Sir Trevor holds a unique place in broadcasting and few of our blind or partially sighted listeners will not have heard his instantly recognisable voice on ITV news or the Tonight programme."

More than 250 national newspaper and magazine titles are available on subscription to blind and partially sighted people from The National Service based in Heathfield, East Sussex, and local news is available free from local Talking Newspaper groups throughout the United Kingdom.
