The 2003 Talking Newspaper fundraising challenge was taken up by volunteer reader, Nick Cranfield, who will be familiar to many as the voice of such publications as BBC Top Gear, The Oldie, Cycle Sport, Steam Railway, Trout & Salmon and TV North listings. He also works with studio recordist, Lisa Dainton, on the fortnightly digest of Our Dogs and Dogs World.
This year, Lisa is taking time out from the daring world of challenge events, having completed a fantastic husky mush above the Arctic Circle in 2002, raising over £20,000. She passed the mantle to Nick, who roved the length and breadth of Great Britain by motorbike in July. Nick is a born-again biker, after a gap of almost fifty years. His trusty push bike, used for two previous charity challenges, now takes second place to a Kawasaki W650 motorcycle.
Setting out from National Recording Centre headquarters in Heathfield, East Sussex, and shunning the motorways for quieter routes, his itinerary took him west via the Eden Project. On up to the western coast of Scotland and the dramatic Cape Wrath, Nick eventually turns south at John O' Groats. Homeward bound stops took take in the Angel of the North and Durham Cathedral. During his travels, he met all expenses personally, and all funds raised will go towards new studio equipment and audio tapes.
Dressed in leathers and "closer to 80 than 70", Nick was keen to prove that there is still plenty of fun to be had in what others call the "twilight years". He had a very personal reason for doing this bike ride. "Having cancer, these days, if you are lucky, needn't necessarily stop you from doing exciting things." It is this spirit which resulted in Nick's idea of a charity challenge bike ride to raise funds for the talking newspaper service.
