Lord Lieutenant Presents Queen’s Award

28/07/08

Mrs Phyllida Stewart-Roberts OBE, the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, presented National Talking Newspapers & Magazines with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service at a ceremony held at Heathfield Community Centre on Saturday 26th July.

In addition to National Talking Newspapers & Magazines volunteers and staff, local MP Charles Hendry, County Council Chairman Bob Lacey OBE - Chairman ESCC along with other senior figures from local government and the voluntary sector were in attendance, along with some of the charity’s visually impaired subscribers.

National Talking Newspapers and Magazines received the award, first announced on June 2nd, in recognition of the vital contribution made by hundreds of volunteers to the charity’s work in providing newspapers and magazines in a variety of audio and other accessible formats for blind and print disabled people.

In particular, the volunteers provide the voices for more than 200 newspapers and magazines recorded at the National Recording Centre in Heathfield. Without this contribution from volunteers it would not be practical to provide the service that has been described as a ‘lifeline’ to so many.
